Currently Garrett Estate Cellars is a 35 acre vineyard. GEC grows seven varieties of grapes including Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Nior. GEC also annually purchase additional Colorado grown wine grapes to ferment other flavors such as Syrah and Cabernet Franc.
The elevation of Garrett Estate Cellars is at 5350 feet above sea level. GEC's terrior includes a soil that is a mix of clay, sand and rock. The ground is a heavy sediment derived soil that is somewhat porous and alkaline.
Climate conditions include an arid/semiarid climate with drastic weather changes along with dramatic season change. Olathe experiences warm to hot days including 10 to 15 days at or above 100 degrees. Although our days are warm, our nights are cool. Evening temperatures will see up to a 30 degree swing in day and night temperatures. Which greatly helps increase the production and storage of the sugars in our grapes. Because the western slope of Olathe is somewhat arid, receiving around 7" inches of precipitation per year. To compensate for low percipitation we do drip irrigation for our vines. Our irrigation water, as with all the farmers in the area, is water from the Uncompaghre River. The river is snow melt and rain water from the San Juan Mountains providing a very nutrient rich water. Which is always appearent in our wines.
