History

Garrett Estate Cellars is a family run business, our arrival into the winery business is unusual.  Our background goes like this. In the 70’s our family lived in Vermont.  At that time our father was director of a U.S. Forestry Labratory and one aspect the labratories research was maple sugar.  During our time In Vermont our father grew and sold landscape and Christmas trees.  Both endevors were successful.

In the 80’s our father began a consulting company.  It is then through the influences of maple trees, hockey and his children that his consultation logo was developed.

During the 90’s our parents began searching for a retirement spot.  They found one in Cortez, CO.  Although, not yet retired they began planting pine and hard wood landscape trees, The trees did well, but our parents decided against retiring in Cortez.

While looking for a new retirement place our parents stumbled on the small town of Olathe, CO and found a beautiful ranch.  Our parents again began to grow landscape trees, however, the enthusiasm changed and one family reunion gave them a new idea.

Our parents on day were visiting a Missouri winery and our mother suggested growing wine grapes.  The next year in 2003 they planted one acre and GEC has grown from there.
